What Do These Virus Removal Scams Look Like?
The screen shot at the top of this article is an example of a scam. It represents an attempt to take money off of you, steal your information, or gain access to your computer for other illicit activities.
Virus Removal Scams pop up random windows on your computer with messages telling you that your computer may have a virus, or that there is a “virus removal” from your computer that needs to happen.
Typically they have a phone number for you to call.
How Do Virus Removal Scams Work?
These viruses are often presented in very technical forms trying to look like other pop-up windows or notifications. If they can convince you to be frightened enough to call the number on the screen then the person on the other end of the line might say they are from a famous company and have detected viruses on your computer. They will then try to trick you into giving them your private information such as:
• Credit Card Information
• Usernames and Passwords
• Social Security Numbers
• Bank or Debit Card Numbers
The Virus Removal Scams might also direct you to a phone number where the person on the line will try to convince you that you need to give them remote access to your computer so they can run anti-virus software. Once they have remote access they might:
• Scan your computer for financial information
• Place a virus on your computer that they will then claim you need to pay for to have removed
• Try to attempt to make you believe a hacker has been in your computer
